Rare Cancers Found in 9/11 First Responders

The co-director of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, indicated on May 31, 2007 that cancer will be “the third wave” of illnesses to beset first responders at the World Trade Center during the September 11 tragedy.

Dr. Robin Herbert noted that of the some 20,000 first WTC patients who had been evaluated in the monitoring program, there were a few cases of multiple myeloma, a specific type of blood cancer affecting plasma cells. Multiple myeloma, usually prevalent only in older patients, was found in younger individuals. In addition, Mt. Sinai published research in 2006 that revealed 70% of WTC workers had developed some form of respiratory illnesses.

The New England Journal of Medicine published an article in May, 2007 on the Legacy of World Trade Center Dust. In it the authors elaborate on the continuing dangers posed by the toxic cloud of dust that enveloped the blocks of New York City immediately surrounding the World Trade Center in the weeks after the terrorist attacks.

If you are suffering from WTC-related illnesses and injuries it may be important for you to contact an attorney to evaluate your legal rights. Keep in mind there are time limits that may affect your claim.
