Use of radioactive iodine (RAI), traditionally considered a safe, convenient, and inexpensive treatment for
hyperthyroidism and thyroid
cancer, may be linked with an increased risk of breast cancer in some patients. A recent study found that women who underwent RAI therapy had a nearly a 20% higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life. The risk appears highest in pre-menopausal white women.
