Combining the drug psoralen with intentional exposure to ultraviolet A radiation, commonly known as UVA rays, is referred to as PUVA Therapy. PUVA Therapy may be used to treat a variety of skin disorders including psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema. A patient undergoing PUVA Therapy must take extra precautions to protect the eyes and skin from the sun, as the treatment increases the body's sensitivity to sunlight. The treatment has been known to cause accelerated aging of the skin. Additionally, PUVA Therapy may increase the risk of developing some forms of skin cancer, including melanoma.
