Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium. The pericardium is a two-layered sac that surrounds the
heart, protecting it from injury and
infection. The swelling associated with pericarditis may be caused by several factors including, but not limited to, heart surgery, Lyme disease and other infections,
radiation treatment, and
anticoagulant and other
drugs.
