Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene knee joint prostheses made by Johnson & Johnson and Depuy are under review because of several reports indicating that the devices are defective. According to lawsuits filed against the companies, the prostheses may prematurely fail after sterilization with gamma radiation.
During the irradiation process, oxygen reacts with the polyethylene chain in an action known as oxidation. The material is subsequently weakened and begins to wear at a much faster rate. It is scientifically proven that oxidation may lower the molecular weight of the polyethylene leading to premature failure of the prosthesis.
