Fibromyalgia syndromes include many disorders which affect soft tissue such as
muscles, tendons and ligaments. The various conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in such areas. While fibromyalgia is not dangerous, the condition can be debilitating. The exact causes of fibromyalgia are not known; however, the condition seems to be brought on by stress,
lack of sleep, certain
infections and injuries, exposure, and rheumatoid
arthritis.
Recently an FDA study suggested a possible, although not confirmed, connection between silicone
breast implants and fibromyalgia. In addition,
cholesterol lowering drugs such as
Baycol,
Lipitor,
Zocor,
Pravachol,
Lescol and
Mevacor, all members of the statin family of drugs, may cause
rhabdomyolysis, a condition that is sometimes
misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia.
