Today, eye surgery is a very common, largely safe and effective
medical procedure. While the
eye is an amazingly complex organ, many of the techniques developed to treat disorders and irregularities of the eye have evolved into seemingly simple outpatient procedures. From
cataract surgery pioneered decades ago, to photorefractive keratectomy or "PRK" procedures to correct vision irregularities, to the latest in laser surgery such as
LASIK, the opportunities for vision improvement are many and varied.
Unfortunately, along with the benefits provided by such procedures come risks. Price competition among eye care providers such as ophthalmologists and laser surgeons, along with the strong demand for their services, has lead to an increase in
medical malpractice claims. While the majority of eye care professionals are highly trained and competent practitioners, the under trained and inexperienced minority can turn an otherwise routine procedure into a medical nightmare.
