Hillsborough County, Florida's Central Service Yard located near Clair-Mel City may be the source of potentially dangerous
toxic contamination. The Tampa Tribune recently revealed that the yard accepts waste collected from County street sweeping operations. While the waste is typically composed of large amounts of dirt dumped from street sweeping machines, studies have found high levels of pesticides,
lead,
arsenic,
cadmium,
chromium,
benzene and petroleum in such refuse.
Government regulators are concerned that such toxic substances may have escaped from the Clair-Mel City yard and contaminated surrounding private drinking water wells. Regulators recommend that residents living in the vicinity of the yard
and who utilize private wells, have their water tested. The Tampa Tribune reported that both Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa illegally dump street sweeping waste into landfills which are not designed to safely contain such waste.
