Churg-Strauss syndrome is an
autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels, abnormal clustering of white blood cells, and accumulated antibodies. The syndrome causes the
immune system to attack the body. This rare disorder affects multiple organ systems including the
kidneys and can cause nerve damage in affected areas. Churg-Strauss may be preceded by
allergic reactions and
asthma.
Symptoms of the syndrome include, but may not be limited to, fever, weight loss, rash, lung tissue infiltrations,
fatigue,
skin lesions, and
muscle pains. Churg-Strauss syndrome is often difficult to
diagnose as early symptoms mimic
influenza.
Doctors use several treatments to fight Churg-Strauss. Early diagnosis increases survival rates.
Onset typically occurs between the ages of 15 to 70. The disease affects both males and females. The exact cause of Churg-Strauss syndrome is unknown.
