Broken Back: Overview
A non-spinal cord back injury occurs when the vertebrae that form the spinal column or "backbone" are injured, while the
spinal cord
that runs through the middle of the spinal column is left uninjured. The spinal column consists of four segments, the Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, and Sacral. Often, vertebrae break or fracture upon violent impact. Fortunately, vertebrae have a remarkable ability to heal themselves.
