Berylliosis, also known as chronic beryllium disease (CBD), can occur after long term exposure to the metal
beryllium. Berylliosis causes noncancerous lesions to form in the
lungs. Symptoms associated with berylliosis include irritation of the mucous membranes,
reduced lung capacity,
shortness of breath,
fatigue, anorexia, dyspnea, malaise,
heart failure, and weight loss. Berylliosis may cause
death.
